Why is supporting local art culture SO important?

Art culture is more than just supporting local artists at small local markets or even small businesses - while that is extremely important - it’s about something bigger! I used “culture” purposefully as art is sometimes the only refuge some children (and adults) can get. That field trip can be crucial, seeing that moving painting at the Revel or watching the weaver on a loom at a farmer’s market may literally change the trajectory of someone’s life. It’s easy to sometimes put art into a novelty category as a pastime or entertainment and while those are also VERY true (and fun!), art culture has real benefits to the development of society. Let me explain…

Once In A Millennium Moon Mural in Downtown Shreveport, LA

Arts and culture play a vital role in shaping the identity of a community or city. Seriously, no joke, the girl holding the crystal ball in the “Once In A Millennium Moon” mural is actually my cousin, Candice Moore Gardner. She now lives in Arkansas but she is forever a Louisiana girl, don’t worry! That painting was INCREDIBLE to watch happen and really identifies downtown Shreveport to me. There were 2500 community members that helped Artist, Meg Saligman Studio complete the work, showcasing what it was like to live in NW Louisiana and putting us on the map for one of the largest murals in the US at 30,000 square feet. I still find myself gawking at it. It’s hard not to - I mean, HOW DID THEY DO IT???

That mural is part of our city’s fabric now and Candice was just a teenager when she was the model for that painting. She is 41 now. Art can really preserve and showcase a region's history, traditions, and values. By supporting local arts, you help maintain and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of your area. This cultural richness contributes to a sense of identity and pride among residents. Let’s cover how this all ties together….

  1. Community Engagement: Cities and communities that prioritize the arts tend to have increased civic and social engagement. Art events and cultural activities provide opportunities for people to come together, share experiences, and connect with one another. This sense of community fosters social cohesion and a greater sense of belonging. We all want to belong - good, bad and ugly….it’s OURS! Let’s make it good.

  2. Economic Prosperity: The arts have the power to stimulate economic growth in a region. As you mentioned, they can attract tourists from around the world. Visitors not only spend money on tickets to performances or art exhibits but also on hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. This influx of tourism dollars can have a significant impact on the local economy, benefiting both large and small businesses. What is that saying? Rising tides float all boats?

  3. Employment Opportunities: The arts and culture sector provides jobs for millions of people. By supporting local arts organizations, you contribute to the creation and sustenance of employment opportunities, particularly in fields such as music, theater, visual arts, and event management. This, in turn, helps reduce unemployment rates and bolsters the local workforce.

  4. Education and Youth Development: Arts education is essential for the holistic development of children. Exposure to the arts at a young age has been linked to improved academic performance, enhanced creativity, and better problem-solving skills. Supporting local arts and cultural programs ensures that children have access to these educational opportunities, setting them up for future success. We all know this is my soapbox. :)

  5. Creativity and Innovation: The arts foster creativity, which is a driving force behind innovation in various fields, including technology, business, and science. When you support the arts, you contribute to a culture of creativity that can lead to breakthroughs and advancements in other sectors, benefiting society as a whole. (YEP, read that again!)

  6. Mental Health and Well-being: Engaging with the arts can have therapeutic effects on individuals. It can reduce stress, improve mental well-being, and provide an outlet for self-expression. By supporting local arts and cultural initiatives, you contribute to the overall health and happiness of your community members. We love some right brain activity around here!

In short, supporting local arts and culture is not just about enjoying art events and exhibitions; it's about investing in the cultural, economic, educational, and social well-being of your community. The arts enrich our lives in countless ways and are a valuable asset that deserves our attention and support.

Wishing you well,

Tessa
